During the period when The Cloisters was being built one of the men who worked on the building at the time was an Andrew Muir. It is recorded he lived at The Cloisters for lengthy period of time. Andrew was an architect by trade, however due to his health which was the reason behind him coming to The Cloisters for the open air school. He chose and pursued his other talents as a stone mason along with his other skills of working with many other materials.
He created basons, rainwater heads, inscriptions out of lead and pewter. He worked with plaster where he put his hands to ceilings, panels frescoes etc. Other materials included wood, tiles, tapestries, Iron, and brass. Andrew left The Cloisters where he went on to have a family and he died in Liverpool 1917.

Andrew Muir was my grandfather. After he died of tuberculosis- his wife – my grandmother brought up their 5 boys and later a granddaughter in Letchworth Garden City in a tiny wooden house / one of the first houses in Letchworth.
