Pargeting is the ornamentation of plastered and rendered building facades that would otherwise be smooth, lined-out or roughcast.
There is a little know fact that the front of The Cloisters should have had a rendered finish to the brickwork call Pargeting. Using the original building plan, we can see the intended markings on the masonry above the arches.
Sadly this was never completed (or Annie changed her mind), however these is one piece that was completed and has survived. It can be seen on the roof of one of the open air classrooms.
Annie had many other intentions for the interior and exterior of the Cloisters, however, even she admitted some projects took time and there were many uncompleted projects she had in mind which all resembled her strong beliefs in mother nature and human life. Some of these symbols are already expressed in the colours used inside the building together such as in the brickwork which she used green and red which was representing flowers.
